A Kitchener driver pulled over by police on June 29, 2026, was asked to hand over their keys but instead presented officers with a potato, according to Waterloo Regional Police. The unusual incident occurred during a routine traffic stop in the city's downtown area around 8:30 p.m.
Driver charged after bizarre exchange
Police say the driver, a 34-year-old Kitchener resident, was stopped for a traffic violation. When asked to provide their driver's license and vehicle keys, the individual handed over a raw potato. Officers immediately recognized the object and arrested the driver on the spot.
The driver faces charges including possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, as the potato was wrapped in aluminum foil and had a toothpick inserted through it. Police also discovered the driver's license was suspended. The accused was released on a promise to appear in court at a later date.
Community reaction and police statement
Waterloo Regional Police spokesperson Constable Ashley Dietrich said, 'We've seen many things handed to officers during traffic stops, but a potato is a first. This incident underscores the importance of taking traffic stops seriously.' The driver is scheduled to appear in Kitchener court on August 10, 2026.
