Citizen Readers Weigh In on 24 Sussex Future

Prime Minister Mark Carney's decision to address the long-deteriorating state of 24 Sussex Drive has sparked a range of reactions from Ottawa Citizen readers, with letters published Tuesday, June 30, 2026, highlighting both support and criticism.

Praise for Courage and Cost-Free Solution

Robert Taylor of Ottawa commended Carney for tackling the issue, calling the building "an embarrassment to the country for over a decade." Taylor noted that the plan comes at no cost to taxpayers, with the design-build jury chaired by renowned Canadian architect Moshe Safdie. "This is a win-win, something the whole country can, and should be very proud of," Taylor wrote, adding a jab at the opposition leader who "enjoys the comfort and perks of Stornoway" while launching "childish attacks."

Preserve Exterior, Demolish Interior

Bob Truong of Ottawa suggested demolishing the interior due to toxic materials but preserving the exterior, which he described as having a "nice looking exterior." He argued the architects should focus solely on interior design, as the building's purpose is to serve as an official residence, not a multi-purpose structure.

Taxpayer Objections to Donation Request

Michelle Albagli of Ottawa expressed strong opposition to being asked to donate to the project. She argued that successive prime ministers from both parties had "watched the official residence slowly rot, being too cowardly to annoy some citizens by spending federal funds." Albagli stated, "I strongly object as a taxpayer being asked to donate to the project: if one federal government had had the courage years ago to refurbish the mansion before it deteriorated to this point, there would have been sufficient money in federal coffers to do so." She concluded, "I shan't be donating a second time to cover up a boondoggle."

Missing Indigenous Perspective

Thomas Brawn, a flutist from Orleans who performed at 24 Sussex for the Mulroneys, noted the discussion lacks mention of Indigenous Canadians. He pointed out the original owner, a lumber baron and MP, treated Indigenous Canadians poorly. Brawn suggested renovating the building as a museum, like Kingsmere or Laurier House, and building a new, modern, sustainable, and defendable residence. He urged, "'Reconcile' this fact!"

Support for PM's Decision

Another reader simply wrote, "Bravo, Mark Carney!" praising him for being the first PM in 11 years willing to touch the "mouldy, rat-infested hot potato" at 24 Sussex Drive.
