Two men have been charged by Calgary Police for allegedly threatening to shoot a northeast business owner, along with his friends and family, as part of an ongoing extortion investigation targeting the South Asian community.

Details of the Case

On May 5, a business in the Saddle Ridge area received demands for money from an unknown individual. The perpetrator claimed they would shoot the owner and their loved ones if the demands were not met. Police were immediately notified and launched an investigation.

On May 28, four men were taken into custody. Officers also executed a search warrant at a residence in the 0 to 100 block of Saddlestone Way N.E.

Charges Laid

Two of the suspects, Sandeep Singh, 30, and Amandeep Mallhi, 39, have each been charged with one count of extortion and one count of possession of proceeds of crime. They are scheduled to appear in court on June 1.

Broader Investigation

Since the Organized Crime & Offender Management unit began its investigation in April 2025, there have been 46 extortion-related incidents. A total of 14 individuals have been charged with 54 criminal offences. Nineteen of these cases involved shootings at homes, businesses, or vehicles.

“We are making meaningful progress in this complex series of extortions, and these latest charges are a direct result of focused, coordinated and proactive police work,” said Supt. Jeff Bell of the CPS Criminal Operations & Intelligence Division. “Each arrest reinforces our commitment to protecting Calgarians and sends a clear message to those involved in these crimes. Extortion will not be tolerated in our city and those responsible will be pursued, arrested and held accountable for their actions.”

Collaboration with Agencies

Calgary Police are working closely with the Canadian Border Services Agency and other law enforcement partners to address these incidents. Anyone with information is urged to contact police at 403-266-1234 or submit an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers.
