Patrick Akapew was sentenced to 11 years in prison for his role in the 2025 killing of Aron Lunan, with the judge emphasizing the senseless nature of the crime. Regina Provincial Court Judge Daryl Rayner noted that the 35-year-old victim lost his life “for some stupid reason,” echoing the words of Lunan’s sister, Christine Kay.
Akapew initially faced a murder charge but pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter. With credit for time served on remand, he has more than nine years and seven months remaining on his sentence.
Background of the Killing
The body of Aron Lunan was discovered on June 10, 2025, in a rural area outside Regina. Britain Volk, then 25, pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in October 2025 and received a life sentence. According to the agreed statement of facts, Volk shot Lunan execution-style after finding what he believed to be his property and drugs in Lunan’s bag.
Akapew assisted by restraining Lunan before he was forced into a vehicle and by using a GPS device to navigate to the location where the killing occurred. Defence lawyer Doug Andrews stated that Akapew was in the “wrong place at the wrong time.”
Akapew's Background and Sentencing
Andrews highlighted that his 30-year-old client from Little Black Bear First Nation had a difficult upbringing, living in over 20 foster homes and with various relatives. He noted the presence of Gladue factors, which consider the impact of colonialism, residential schools, racism, poverty, and addiction on Indigenous offenders.
Akapew developed a drug problem and assisted during the incident in hopes of obtaining drugs, as he was told he would receive some if he cooperated. Andrews added that fear played a role in his client’s decision not to flee. Akapew “never, ever believed” a murder would occur and “feels terrible about what happened,” according to his lawyer.
Four people were initially charged with murder in connection with Lunan’s death. Tyler Wayne Edwards, who also faced a murder charge, received an 11-year sentence after pleading guilty to manslaughter in February. He was identified as the driver of the stolen vehicle used to transport Lunan.
