Five More Arrests in North York Anti-Israel Protest
Toronto Police have arrested five additional individuals in connection with a demonstration that took place in a predominantly Jewish neighbourhood earlier this year. The arrests were announced by Police Chief Myron Demkiw during a news conference on Monday afternoon at police headquarters.
“We will continue to be relentless in following the evidence to hold those who commit criminal acts accountable, no matter how long it takes,” Demkiw said. “Today is an example of what we mean when we say that charges can come at any time after an incident.”
The accused are alleged to have attended the demonstration on March 15 alongside other pro-Palestinian protesters. According to police, they either displayed or distributed antisemitic signs, and some individuals were disguised during the alleged offences. The arrests were carried out on Sunday following the execution of several search warrants in Toronto and Durham Region.
Hate Has a Real Impact
Images from the protest at the intersection of Bathurst Street and Sheppard Avenue West depicted Jews in a negative light. “Hate has real impact; antisemitic behaviour like this creates fear, anxiety and division in our communities,” Demkiw stated. “Through the tireless work of the Counter-Terrorism Security Unit, we investigate thoroughly, gather evidence carefully, and pursue charges when there are reasonable grounds and legal authority to do so.”
All five accused have been charged with wilful promotion of hatred. Demkiw noted that this is a “very serious charge” and a “rare charge,” as it requires the consent of the Ontario Attorney General. Since the start of the Israel-Hamas war in October 2023, this charge has been laid 11 times, compared to only four times in the decade prior.
Details of the Charges
- Hosaam Hemdan, 19, of Toronto, charged with wilful promotion of hatred, wearing a disguise with intent, and public incitement of hatred.
- Omer Turcan, 43, of Toronto, charged with wilful promotion of hatred, wearing a disguise with intent, and public incitement of hatred.
- Syed Hussaini, 43, of Whitby, charged with wilful promotion of hatred, wearing a disguise with intent, and public incitement of hatred.
- Hasan Aydin, 48, of Toronto, charged with wilful promotion of hatred and public incitement of hatred.
- Yasaf Shaikh, of Toronto, charged with wilful promotion of hatred and public incitement of hatred.
These latest charges add to the arrest of 33-year-old Muhammad Anas Sial, of Toronto, who was charged with wilful promotion of hatred and public incitement of hatred in April and May. This brings the total number of individuals charged to six.
Chief Demkiw emphasized that the police will continue to pursue justice, regardless of how long it takes. The investigation remains ongoing, and further arrests are possible.
