Over the recent long holiday weekend, the Essex County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) laid numerous charges across the region, highlighting a concerning spike in criminal activities. The charges spanned a range of offenses, including impaired driving, spousal abuse, theft, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, and driving without a valid licence. This enforcement effort underscores ongoing public safety concerns during holiday periods.

Friday Incidents Lead to Initial Arrests

The weekend's enforcement actions began on Friday around 6:30 p.m., when officers conducted a traffic stop in response to a shoplifting incident at a business on Erie Street South in Leamington. During this stop, two individuals were charged. The driver, a 35-year-old woman from Essex, faces multiple charges, including impaired driving, driving with cannabis readily available, driving without a licence, and theft under $5,000. Additionally, a 38-year-old woman from Leamington, who was a passenger in the vehicle, was also charged with theft under $5,000.

Later that same evening, police investigated a single motor vehicle collision on Arther Avenue in Essex. This incident led to the arrest of a 41-year-old man from Essex, who was charged with two counts of impaired driving and one count of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

Saturday and Sunday Bring Further Arrests

On Saturday, around 4:40 p.m., police responded to a traffic complaint on Amy Croft Drive in Lakeshore. This resulted in the arrest of a 41-year-old man from Essex, who was charged with impaired driving. Later that evening, at approximately 7 p.m., officers investigated a vehicle found in a ditch on St. Clair Road in Lakeshore. A 59-year-old man from Belle River was charged with two counts of impaired driving in connection with this incident.

Sunday saw continued enforcement activity. Police investigated a traffic complaint on County Road 23 near South Malden Road in Kingsville, leading to the arrest of a 55-year-old man from Kingsville. He was charged with impaired driving and having cannabis readily available in the vehicle. Additionally, officers were called to a collision on Highway 401 in Tecumseh just before 3 p.m. A 32-year-old man from Windsor was arrested and faces multiple charges, including impaired driving, possession of the proceeds of property obtained by crime under $5,000, drug trafficking (cocaine), failure to remain at the scene, and driving without a licence.

Monday Incidents Conclude Weekend Enforcement

Early Monday morning, just after 2 a.m., police conducted a traffic stop on Mersea Road 19 in Leamington following an intimate partner violence complaint. A 30-year-old resident of Essex was arrested and charged with two counts of impaired driving and one count of spousal assault.

The final arrest of the weekend occurred on Monday evening around 10 p.m., when officers conducted a traffic stop on County Road 42 near Manning Road in Tecumseh. A 53-year-old man from Maidstone was arrested and charged with two counts of impaired driving.

Consequences for Charged Drivers

All drivers charged over the weekend faced immediate consequences. Each had their driver's licence suspended for 90 days and their vehicle impounded for seven days. Additionally, all individuals will be required to appear in court to answer to the charges laid against them.
