Police in Bolton and Barrie are warning residents about a surge in distraction thefts, where thieves use conversation or other tactics to divert attention before stealing jewelry. The warning comes after multiple incidents reported in recent weeks, according to local law enforcement.
How Distraction Thefts Occur
Thieves typically approach victims in public places, engaging them in conversation or asking for directions. While the victim is distracted, an accomplice or the perpetrator themselves removes necklaces, bracelets, or rings. In some cases, the thieves may pretend to be selling something or seeking help.
“Keep your jewelry close at hand when talking to strangers,” advised Cheryl Browne of BarrieNews. The advice is echoed by police, who note that seniors are often targeted due to their perceived vulnerability.
Reported Incidents
One recent incident involved a woman in a Bolton parking lot who was approached by a stranger complimenting her necklace. The thief then snatched the jewelry and fled. Barrie police have also received reports of similar thefts in shopping centers and along busy streets.
Authorities believe the thieves may be part of an organized group operating across the region. No arrests have been made yet, but investigations are ongoing.
Prevention Tips
Police urge residents to be vigilant and avoid wearing expensive jewelry in public. Keep valuables out of sight and be cautious when approached by strangers. If you witness a theft, call 911 immediately and provide a description of the suspect.
