Calgary Teen Charged with Assault on Grandmother Receiving Mental Health Treatment

During a court hearing on Wednesday, it was revealed that the teenager is currently receiving mental health treatment at Alberta Hospital in Edmonton, which prevented his appearance in court.

According to police reports, officers responded to a residence in the Pineridge neighborhood of northeast Calgary around 7 p.m. on Sunday evening after receiving a call about an altercation. Upon arrival, they discovered a woman in her 50s in medical distress. She was immediately transported to hospital where she remains in life-threatening condition. The 15-year-old was subsequently charged with aggravated assault and mischief to property under $5,000.
Defence counsel Leanndria Halcro informed Youth Court Justice Diana Mah that her client could not attend court as he is currently under treatment at the forensic unit of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton. Halcro noted that she has been retained to represent the accused on other charges but not the most recent allegations involving the assault. She expects to be retained for the new charges as well.

The teenager was already free on other charges, including child pornography-related allegations, at the time of the Sunday evening attack. Crown lawyer Jenny Rees, who is prosecuting the teen on the child pornography charges, informed the court that she has been notified the accused was previously hospitalized, which led to charges for failing to appear in court.
Rees stated she will be applying to revoke the accused's release on the pornography charges in light of the latest allegations against him. "We are giving bail revocation notice on the child pornography charges," she told Justice Mah.
Because of his hospitalization, the teen was unable to appear in court on Wednesday. Rees suggested the case be adjourned to April 15, when the youth was scheduled to make his first appearance on the child abuse allegations. Justice Mah indicated that if the teenager has been released from hospital by that date, he can appear via video link from the Calgary Young Offenders Centre.
