JD Vance Criticizes Canada's Immigration Policy and CBC
JD Vance slams Canada's 'immigration insanity'

American Vice President JD Vance has sparked a cross-border controversy by directly commenting on Canadian domestic affairs, specifically targeting the nation's immigration policies and its public broadcaster.

Vance's Social Media Critique

On November 21, 2025, Vance used the social media platform X to respond to a post discussing Canada's declining economic metrics. The original post featured a graph from Ice Cap Asset Management that compared GDP per person across the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada.

The Vice President did not mince words, stating, "While I'm sure the causes are complicated, no nation has leaned more into 'diversity is our strength, we don't need a melting pot we have a salad bowl' immigration insanity than Canada."

Linking Immigration to Economic Stagnation

Vance further elaborated on his position, directly connecting Canada's demographic profile to its economic performance. "It has the highest foreign-born share of the population in the entire G7 and its living standards have stagnated," he continued in his post.

He also addressed what he perceives as a Canadian tendency to focus on American politics, writing: "And with all due respect to my Canadian friends, whose politics focus obsessively on the United States: your stagnating living standards have nothing to do with Donald Trump or whatever bogeyman the CBC tells you to blame. The fault lies with your leadership, elected by you."

The Canadian Context and Government Stance

Vance's comments reference verifiable Canadian census data. According to the 2021 census, almost one in four people in Canada (23 percent) are immigrants. This represents the largest proportion of immigrants in the country in 150 years and is indeed the highest among all G7 nations.

The Canadian federal government maintains a different perspective on immigration. On its official immigration webpage, the government states, "In the same way that immigration has created the Canada we all enjoy today, immigration is central to our future."

This public critique from a senior U.S. official highlights the contrasting approaches to immigration between the two neighboring nations. The Trump administration has pursued a policy titled "Protecting the American People Against Invasion," which has involved aggressive enforcement and streamlined deportation protocols.
