A Louisiana man who gained viral fame for his powerful speech against a Republican plan to redraw the state's congressional maps is now considering a run for public office. Marshan Camese, known as Nola tha Progressive on TikTok, delivered an impassioned critique during a Louisiana state Senate committee meeting, calling the MAGA party the "last breath of the Confederacy."
Viral Speech and Public Reaction
During the meeting, Camese stated, "I have no doubt in my mind that the map's gonna pass. If y'all could give us less than zero seats, you would do it." He further accused the GOP of acting under orders from someone who claimed the Civil Rights Act was harmful to white people. Camese told HuffPost that he waited nearly 10 hours to speak and simply expressed what was on his mind. However, he noted that senators were not receptive to his comments. "A coward never really likes to look at you when you're telling them the truth," he said. Camese believes Republican members are "traitors to the country" who "should all go to jail."
Redistricting Context
Republican lawmakers in Louisiana rushed to redraw U.S. House maps following a Supreme Court decision weakening Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act. Governor Jeff Landry suspended primary elections last month despite nearly 45,000 early ballots already cast. On Thursday, GOP leaders approved a map maintaining only one Democrat-majority district, compared to two in the previous map. The new map awaits approval in the state House and likely signature by Landry.
Political Future
Despite the GOP's efforts, Camese believes the party faces destruction. "Donald Trump will continue to fuck up and be the best advertisement to vote Democrat," he said. Many online supporters urged him to run for office. Camese confirmed he is considering it but expressed distrust in traditional Democratic platforms. "I'm currently trying to get in touch with either Bernie Sanders or David Hogg," he added, citing trust in progressive values.
