Tsuut'ina Nation Chooses New Leadership Path

The Tsuut'ina Nation has spoken decisively through its 2025 election, selecting fresh leadership while declining to re-elect two former chiefs who face serious criminal charges. Ellery Starlight has been elected as the new Head Chief, marking a significant shift in the community's governance.

In a clear message from the electorate, neither former Chief Roy Whitney nor former Minor Chief Emmet Crowchild secured re-election. Both men were facing sexual assault charges that had been laid earlier this year, creating a backdrop of controversy around the election process.

A New Era Under Ellery Starlight

The newly elected Head Chief brings substantial experience and a respected track record to the position. Ellery Starlight previously served on the Nation's council and played a pivotal role in establishing the Tsuut'ina Peacemaker Court. This innovative judicial system represents a groundbreaking fusion of the Alberta court system with traditional Indigenous Peacemaker processes.

Starlight is widely recognized as a committed advocate for Indigenous rights and community development. His election signals a preference for leadership grounded in both traditional values and practical governance experience.

In a heartfelt statement shared on Facebook early Friday morning, Starlight expressed humility and commitment to his new role. "I believe in you and I will do my best to serve you with all the knowledge, wisdom, courage and traditions you have given me," he told community members.

The election also determined the composition of the minor chief council, with voters opting for a mix of experienced leadership and new perspectives. Six minor chiefs were re-elected from the previous term:

  • Tyson Heavenfire
  • Kendall Jacobs
  • Paula Big Plume
  • Kelsey Big Plume
  • Corrine Eagletail
  • Paul Whitney

They will be joined by six newly elected minor chiefs:

  • Hine Crowchild
  • Waylon Big Plume
  • Jeanne Crowchild
  • Zachary Manywounds
  • Twylla Starlight
  • LeeRoy Meguinis

Starlight acknowledged both his fellow candidates and the previous leadership in his post-election statement, noting "You have shown Tsuut'ina how wise and intelligent we are as a Nation. This goes to show that your teaching and devotion to us is unmatched."

The new leader also made a commitment to listening to community voices, stating "I've heard your stories and ideas; and I would be a fool if I didn't bring them forward. We have work to do." This statement suggests a collaborative approach to addressing the Nation's priorities in the coming term.
