Russia Unleashes Over 270 Drones on Ukraine in Overnight Assault
Russian forces launched a massive drone attack on Ukraine overnight, deploying more than 270 unmanned aerial vehicles that resulted in at least five fatalities, according to Ukrainian authorities on Saturday. The assault targeted multiple regions, including the key Black Sea port city of Odesa, where a maternity hospital and residential homes were damaged.
Civilian Casualties and Infrastructure Damage Reported
In Odesa, regional head Serhii Lysak confirmed that two individuals lost their lives and at least eleven others sustained injuries due to the drone strike. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack, describing it as "pure terror against ordinary civilian life" with no military objective. He noted that over 60 drones were involved in the Odesa assault alone, causing extensive harm to port facilities, critical infrastructure, and business premises.
Additional casualties occurred in central Ukraine, with two men killed and two wounded in Kryvyi Rih after a drone hit an industrial site, as reported by regional leader Oleksandr Gandzha. Another death was recorded in the Poltava region, where Russian strikes targeted unspecified industrial locations. Ukraine's air force stated that 252 of the 273 drones launched were successfully intercepted or jammed.
Zelenskyy's Diplomatic Mission in the Gulf
Amid the escalating conflict, President Zelenskyy made surprise visits to the United Arab Emirates and Qatar on Saturday. His discussions with Emirati leader Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan focused on regional security amid the ongoing war in the Middle East, which erupted after U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran. Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of partnership in building real security, posting on social media about his arrival in Qatar to engage with officials.
Last week, Zelenskyy revealed that Ukraine is assisting five countries—the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, and Jordan—in countering Iranian drone strikes. In return, Kyiv seeks advanced air-defense missiles from these Gulf nations to bolster its defenses against Russian aggression. Ukraine has emerged as a leading producer of cost-effective drone interceptors, crucial in its defense against Russia's full-scale invasion.
Cross-Border Strikes and Regional Implications
In a related development, a child died in Russia's Yaroslavl region after a Ukrainian drone struck a private house, according to local Governor Mikhail Evraev. The child's parents were hospitalized with serious injuries, and a neighbor was also hurt in the attack, which involved over 30 drones being shot down. The Russian Defense Ministry reported that 155 Ukrainian drones were intercepted overnight over Russia and occupied Crimea.
The Middle East conflict has disrupted global travel and driven up oil prices, with Zelenskyy discussing the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and its impact on the global economy during his Gulf visits. His diplomatic efforts aim to strengthen alliances and enhance security cooperation, as Ukraine continues to navigate the dual challenges of domestic defense and international diplomacy.
