Police and safety experts in Calgary are urging motorcycle drivers to exercise extra caution after three crashes occurred in just one week, including two that resulted in fatalities. The incidents have prompted renewed calls for vigilance among riders and other motorists sharing the road.
Details of the Crashes
According to Calgary police, the three collisions happened between June 22 and June 29, 2026. Two of the crashes were fatal, with riders dying at the scene or shortly after being transported to hospital. The third crash left a motorcyclist with serious injuries. Police have not released the names of the victims pending notification of next of kin.
“We are seeing a troubling pattern of high-speed and reckless driving involving motorcycles,” said Calgary Police Service Traffic Unit Sgt. Mark Villani. “We urge all riders to wear proper safety gear, obey speed limits, and be aware of their surroundings at all times.”
Safety Experts Weigh In
Local safety advocates echoed the police warning, emphasizing that motorcycle riders are particularly vulnerable on the road. “Motorcycles offer far less protection than cars, so even a minor mistake can have devastating consequences,” said Jane Doe, a spokesperson for the Calgary Safety Council. “We recommend that riders take advanced training courses and always assume other drivers may not see them.”
The recent spike in crashes comes as Calgary experiences warmer weather, which typically leads to more motorcycles on the road. Statistics from Alberta Transportation show that motorcycle fatalities in the province have increased by 12% over the past two years, with 45 deaths recorded in 2025.
Police Enforcement and Public Response
Calgary police have increased patrols in areas known for motorcycle accidents, including Deerfoot Trail and Crowchild Trail. Officers are also conducting spot checks for impaired driving and speeding. “We want to prevent further tragedies,” Sgt. Villani added. “Enforcement is one part of the solution, but we also need cooperation from the public.”
Residents have expressed concern over the recent crashes. “It’s scary to hear about so many accidents in such a short time,” said local motorcyclist Tom Smith. “I always ride defensively, but you can’t control what others do.”
Impact on the Community
The fatalities have sent shockwaves through Calgary’s motorcycle community, with riders organizing a memorial ride in honor of the victims. “We want to show support for the families and remind everyone to stay safe out there,” said event organizer Lisa Brown. The ride is scheduled for July 3, 2026.
Police continue to investigate the causes of the crashes and urge anyone with information to come forward. “If you witnessed any of these incidents, please contact our traffic unit,” Sgt. Villani said. “Your information could help prevent future tragedies.”
