Deterrence First: MMA Instructors Teach Home Invasion Safety

Deterrence 'First Step' When It Comes to Home Invasions, MMA Instructors Say

When an intruder attempts to force their way into a home, many residents feel powerless to protect themselves or their property. This sentiment is particularly acute in the Greater Toronto Area, where home invasions have garnered increasing attention, leaving families anxious about their safety within their own walls.

Addressing a Growing Concern

In response to this rising fear, mixed martial arts instructors Steve Hyatt and Frank Visconti, founders of Point Blank Martial Arts, have launched Home Invasion Protection. This innovative seminar series aims to equip homeowners with comprehensive strategies to safeguard their households. The co-founders identified a gap in available training programs specifically tailored to home invasion scenarios, prompting them to develop a holistic approach.

"We set out to create a program that brings everything together, from home fortification strategies all the way to self-defence tactics," Hyatt explained. The monthly seminars integrate practical safety planning, ensuring participants leave with actionable knowledge.

Community-Driven Initiative

Hyatt and Visconti have listened to concerns from community members, especially those of smaller stature worried about defending against multiple attackers. One poignant example involved a mother of a martial arts student who sought guidance after a nearby break-and-enter incident. "I always stress violence is never an option unless it’s the only option," Hyatt emphasized. "The first step should be deterrence: Making your home a less appealing target to reduce the likelihood of an incident happening altogether."

From deterrence, the program progresses to teaching effective responses if a violent situation arises, ensuring homeowners are prepared without promoting aggression.

Beyond Physical Defense

While self-defense techniques are a core component, the seminar extends far beyond physical combat. Participants learn to establish safe rooms and practice extraction drills, tailored to their home's unique layout. Visconti noted, "What we do is guide attendees through how to assess their own space and think critically about it." These drills focus on making quick, confident decisions rather than memorizing rigid steps.

Hyatt added, "This way, attendees have a framework they can apply to their own home and leave the seminar with something that feels practical, personal and usable at home." The ultimate goal is to neutralize potential threats safely, not to encourage reckless confrontation.

Hands-On and Interactive Learning

The seminars prioritize engagement through hands-on activities, including group instruction, partner-based practice, and individual coaching. Even theoretical concepts are presented interactively to maintain participant interest. A standout feature involves live demonstrations with protection dogs, showcasing an additional safety layer that can deter attackers on command.

"Ultimately, the goal is to get participants out of their seats, moving, thinking and learning to respond in real time, so they walk out of the seminar feeling more prepared and capable," Visconti stated.

A Grassroots Effort for Safety

Currently held monthly, Home Invasion Protection has garnered positive feedback from attendees and online followers. The co-founders aspire to increase frequency as demand grows. Hyatt clarified, "It’s a grassroots effort. We’re not a large organization that’s hosting these panels to try to sell people security systems or whatever."

Visconti echoed this sentiment, "We’re just two people who want to help others feel safe in their homes and have the confidence to safely navigate a situation nobody ever wants to be in." More information is available at their website, homeinvasion.com, as they continue to empower communities with vital safety skills.
