Sporting Christmas Nears $50,000 as Donors Honour Loved Ones and Traditions
Sporting Christmas Fund Approaches $50,000 Milestone

The spirit of giving is shining brightly as the annual Sporting Christmas campaign closes in on a significant milestone of $50,000. Donors from across the community are stepping forward with generous contributions, ensuring the tradition continues to support the Salvation Army's vital Christmas hamper program in Saskatoon.

Honouring a Legacy of Giving

This year's campaign is marked by poignant stories of remembrance. For over a decade, Corrine Weiman was a steadfast donor, giving in memory of her grandson, Michael Manderscheid. Michael, an avid participant in wheelchair sports like sledge hockey and racing, as well as hunting and fishing, passed away previously. This year, the tradition is lovingly continued by Corrine's daughter, Joan Manderscheid, who now donates in honour of both her mother and her son.

"My mom, Corrine, also liked sports. She played ball and loved to run. Mom was also her kids' biggest fan and her grandchildren as well," shared Joan, whose donation adds to the growing total. Corrine Weiman passed away earlier this year, making this tribute especially meaningful for the family.

Community Groups and Generous Gifts

The campaign has also seen impactful donations from community groups. Louise Humbert contributed on behalf of her KIN 146 class at the University of Saskatchewan, future teachers who she says "truly understand how important it is to help our community."

In a major show of support, Robert Campbell sent a $1,500 donation to honour the Saskatoon Antiques Senior Hockey Club and pay tribute to nine passed members: Clare McCarty, Bob Dawes, Elmer Walker, Ian McLean, Don Miller, Neil McQueen, Ron Lambert, Frank Shycoski, and Marcel Gallagher.

Another heartfelt gift came from the Lovell family, who donated $300 in loving memory of Frank Lovell and Rick Lovell. This donation was initially printed with incomplete information, and the campaign organizers have made sure to correctly acknowledge it in the latest update.
