Ottawa Mission Achieves Historic Easter Meal Service Record
The Ottawa Mission, the city's oldest and largest homeless shelter, made this Easter a truly special occasion for thousands by serving an unprecedented 18,302 meals throughout the holiday week. This remarkable achievement represents a new organizational record, surpassing the previous mark of 18,275 meals set during last Christmas season.
Community Comes Together for Holiday Celebration
On Easter Sunday alone, the Mission served 1,756 traditional turkey dinners at their 53 Daly Street location. Volunteers, politicians, and community leaders worked side by side to provide not just nourishment but also a vital sense of connection for those who might otherwise spend the holiday alone.
"This meal brings everybody together," said Chef Ric Watson, the Mission's Director of Food Services and founder of their Food Services Training Program for vulnerable community members. Watson led a dedicated team of cooks and volunteers who prepared all meals and desserts, ensuring everything ran smoothly.
Food Trucks Extend Reach Across Ottawa
The Mission's two food trucks played a crucial role in this record-breaking effort, delivering 16,109 meals to 41 different Ottawa neighborhoods throughout the week leading up to Easter. One truck, stationed just outside the shelter entrance, served an estimated 200 hot chocolates by noon on Easter Sunday alone.
Hanriq Cangrre, who operated the hot chocolate truck, had been working diligently all week. "Can I have one?" asked André Lapensée as he approached the truck after enjoying his meal. Cangrre eagerly handed him a cup, continuing the tradition of warm hospitality.
Personal Stories Highlight Mission's Impact
André Lapensée, who spent four months at the Ottawa Mission three years ago, returned to visit on the holiday. "We were treated better than being in a fancy restaurant," he shared emotionally. "That's how it made me feel. I cry over everything - simple, happy tears."
Lapensée credited the shelter's services with helping him turn his life around, securing both employment and housing within six months of leaving the Mission. His story exemplifies the organization's broader impact beyond holiday meals.
Political Support and Community Engagement
Mona Fortier, MP for Ottawa—Vanier—Gloucester, attended with her mother and a colleague to serve water and juice, a tradition she maintains three times yearly during major holidays. "Sometimes I give extra," she confessed with a laugh. "It's the little things."
Fortier expressed that while the smiles she receives are fulfilling, they also remind her that "there's still a lot of work to do." She views the Mission's efforts as heroic community service that addresses critical needs.
Breaking Down the Numbers
The comprehensive meal service included:
- 18,302 total meals served during Easter week
- 1,756 meals served specifically on Easter Sunday
- 16,109 meals delivered via food trucks to 41 neighborhoods
- 437 meals provided to community partner organizations
From the traditional turkey with stuffing to sweet desserts, the annual celebration offered both comfort food and meaningful human connection. Monia Bikai and Kale Charlebois were among the many who enjoyed the festive turkey dinner, highlighting how the event brought together diverse community members.
The Ottawa Mission's record-breaking Easter service demonstrates how holiday celebrations can extend warmth and support to those most in need, creating moments of joy and dignity during special occasions throughout the year.
