Davis Takes Over Regina's Christmas Cheer Fund with $11,775 Start
New Steward for Regina Christmas Cheer Fund Campaign

Regina's beloved Christmas Cheer Fund has a new leader at the helm as veteran sports writer Darrell Davis takes over stewardship of the annual fundraising campaign that supports local women's shelters. The transition marks a significant moment for the community initiative that has been bringing holiday hope to Regina for decades.

A Legacy of Giving Continues

The Christmas Cheer Fund traces its modern roots back to 1992, when former sports editor Gregg Drinnan discovered references to a charity fund operated by the Regina Leader-Post during the 1920s. The original fund ran until 1972 before Drinnan resurrected it with executive approval, establishing the tradition of directing all raised funds to Regina's women's shelters.

Davis becomes the sixth steward in the fund's history, following in the footsteps of Drinnan, Irene Seiberling, Will Chabun, Rob Vanstone, and most recently Murray Mandryk. "I'm the only one left from that group still at the Leader-Post," noted Davis, who rejoined the editorial staff in 2023 after his first stint from 1983 to 2008.

Strong Start with Generous Donations

The 2025-26 campaign has already generated impressive momentum with $11,775 raised in early donations. The substantial start comes thanks to several significant contributions, including a $4,500 donation from Chet and Patti Brothers, $4,000 from The Lydia Foundation, and $1,000 from the Melray Foundation.

Other early supporters include Holy Cross C.W.L. with $700, Marie Froh and Sheri Hupp and Geoff Brown (in memory of Allan, Loretta and Darcie) with $200 each, Mary Senko with $500, and Wendy Fraipont and Gaylene Diekrager with $100 each. An anonymous donor contributed $475 to the growing total.

Supporting Regina's Vital Women's Shelters

Every dollar raised through the Christmas Cheer Fund will be distributed in February among Regina's four essential women's shelters: Regina Transition House, the YWCA's Isabel Johnson Shelter, WISH Safe House, and SOFIA House. These organizations provide critical safe havens and support services for women and families experiencing domestic violence and homelessness.

The South Saskatchewan Community Foundation handles tax receipt issuance for all donations, ensuring donors receive proper documentation for their charitable contributions. Last year's campaign demonstrated remarkable community generosity, raising $162,528.81 for the cause.

Davis expressed both honor and responsibility in taking on his new role, acknowledging the fund's history and the ongoing need in the community. "It's my turn to watch our generous donors work towards that amount," he said, referencing last year's successful total.

The Christmas Cheer Fund represents one of Regina's longest-running charitable traditions, connecting generations of donors with vital community services. As Davis assumes leadership, the campaign continues its mission of bringing holiday hope and practical support to women and families in need throughout the Regina area.
