Interior designer Virginie Martocq helps readers tackle tricky decorating issues in this weekend decorator column. A reader from Little Italy seeks advice on transforming her boring bedroom into a stylish space that complements a striking walnut storage wall.
The Design Challenge
Lisa's bedroom features an amazing built-in storage wall with walnut veneer, but the rest of the room lacks pizzazz. The goal is to match the decor to this standout piece and create a cohesive, moody atmosphere.
What's Not Working
Virginie identifies several issues: dated crystal and mirror accents that clash with the walnut vibe, crisp white tones that need to shift to a warmer palette, a makeshift IKEA cube bench, and curtains with a geometric pattern that competes with the built-in's geometry. Fortunately, these are easy fixes.
Step-by-Step Makeover Plan
1. Start with a Large Rug
A large rug covering most of the floor will help unify the room. The existing yellowish oak strip flooring fights with the warm chocolatey tones of the storage wall. Choose a simple, lush natural wool rug or a more traditional Persian or tribal rug in warm ochre, brown, and black. Virginie prefers geometric large-scale patterns.
2. Replace Curtains
Swap the patterned curtains for solid-colored panels in a rustic linen slub, such as oatmeal. If you choose a colored rug, pick a tone from it for the curtains. Use a darker rod and lower it to sit just above the halfway mark between the window casing and ceiling.
3. Remove the Storage/Seating Unit
Get rid of the bench at the foot of the bed to prevent a floating look. Consider a new headboard with a woven or cane texture. Alternatively, add a bed skirt and paint the nail heads on the existing headboard to reduce shine.
4. Update Night Tables and Lamps
The night tables and lamps must go. Opt for lower, horizontal tables in teak or walnut that nod to mid-century style—thrift stores or estate sales are good sources. Choose lamps with brass or ceramic bases for warmth.
5. Refresh Cushions and Bedding
Swap window bench cushions and replace bed shams and throws with more colorful, patterned options. Warm terracotta, ochre, and occasional jewel tones like teal, navy, or cognac work well.
6. Add Art Above the Bed
Find a personal piece of art that picks up on the new colors. Alternatively, a large mirror with a carved wood or brass frame adds warmth and visual interest.
7. Keep the Ceiling Light
The existing ceiling light is fabulous and will look great in the cozy new space.
