CALEDON, Ont. – While some husbands cannot buy a golf shirt without their wife's approval, Brooks Koepka is making multi-million dollar decisions entirely on his own.
The five-time major champion left LIV Golf with one year remaining on a five-year contract reportedly worth $100 million. He accepted the PGA Tour's offer to pay a $5 million fine to charity and return to his previous tour. Such a move might seem like something to discuss with advisers or a spouse, but Koepka did not.
"No, I didn't discuss it with anybody," Koepka said this week at the RBC Canadian Open. "I look at it as I let my wife do her job, and I do mine. I try to do what's best for myself and try to do what's best for my family and base my decisions off that."
How much money did he lose by leaving LIV? Getting to the bottom of LIV Golf contract specifics is nearly impossible, but if Koepka left a year on the table, that could be $20 million. Adding the $5 million fine to return to the PGA Tour makes for a substantial sum.
Koepka and his wife Jena Sims have discussed how difficult 2025 was on their family after suffering a miscarriage. Last month at the PGA Championship, he told reporters that his family is doing much better.
Koepka is in contention at TPC Toronto, and his game appears to be rounding into form just in time for next week's U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills in New York, a tournament he has won twice, including in 2018 the last time it was played there.
Koepka reiterated this week that he has received a warm welcome back to the PGA Tour, something that was never guaranteed for LIV Golf players attempting to return.
"Yeah, it's been great. It's been nice to be back," he said. "I've enjoyed it. I think the players have been very receptive. I haven't heard (anything negative), at least nobody said it to my face about anything. A lot of, 'We're glad you back.'"
"I know myself, my family, everybody's happy and excited to see what this next part is."
