Anton Koch, a retiree in Calgary, has crafted a one-of-a-kind wooden bicycle that is fully functional and rideable. Using a combination of birch, walnut, oak, and maple, Koch spent months designing and building the bike, which he says is both durable and lightweight.
A Unique Project
The idea for the wooden bicycle came to Koch during his retirement as a way to combine his love for woodworking and cycling. He carefully selected each type of wood for its strength and aesthetic qualities. The frame is made primarily of birch and walnut, while the wheels feature oak and maple spokes.
Craftsmanship and Challenges
Koch faced several challenges during the building process, including ensuring the wood could withstand the stresses of riding. He reinforced critical joints with metal brackets and used a special sealant to protect the wood from moisture. The bike weighs approximately 15 kilograms, comparable to a standard metal bicycle.
Community Interest
Since completing the bicycle, Koch has shown it at local community events, where it has drawn significant attention. Fellow cycling enthusiasts and woodworkers have praised his creativity and skill. Koch hopes his project inspires others to explore unique hobbies in retirement.
Future Plans
Koch is considering building additional wooden bicycles, possibly incorporating other types of wood or designs. He also plans to share his techniques online to encourage others to try similar projects.
