Major Vehicle Recalls in Canada: Nissan and GM Address Safety Concerns
Nissan and GM Recall Thousands of Vehicles in Canada

Major Vehicle Recalls Announced in Canada Affecting Nissan and GM Models

Transport Canada has issued multiple recall notices affecting thousands of vehicles across the country, with Nissan and General Motors addressing significant safety concerns in popular SUV models. The recalls involve potential engine failures and transmission issues that could increase crash risks, prompting immediate action from both manufacturers.

Nissan Rogue Recalls Target Engine and Software Problems

The first Nissan recall impacts 42,722 vehicles, specifically the 2023, 2024, and 2025 Nissan Rogue models equipped with 1.5 L variable compression engines. According to Transport Canada, these vehicles may have been manufactured improperly, leading to abnormal engine noises and warning lights. If drivers continue operating vehicles with these symptoms, the engine could fail completely, potentially causing sudden power loss to the wheels or even vehicle fires.

Transport Canada emphasized the seriousness of these defects, stating, "An engine failure could cause a sudden loss of power to the wheels and/or increase the risk of a vehicle fire. Both issues could increase the risk of a crash or injury." Nissan will notify affected owners by mail and instruct them to bring their vehicles to dealerships for engine control module updates, along with inspections and potential engine replacements.

Second Nissan Recall Addresses Electronic Throttle Concerns

A separate Nissan recall affects 47,559 additional 2024 and 2025 Rogue vehicles with the same 1.5 L variable compression engines. This recall focuses on a software problem that could cause the electronic throttle chamber to fail, potentially resulting in loss of power to the wheels. Transport Canada warned that this power loss could significantly increase crash risks.

For this second recall, Nissan will again notify owners by mail and direct them to dealerships for engine control module updates. Dealers will inspect the electronic throttle chamber and replace it if necessary to ensure proper vehicle operation and safety.

General Motors SUVs Face Transmission Issues

In addition to the Nissan recalls, General Motors is recalling approximately 2,000 SUVs in Canada due to problems with 10-speed automatic transmissions. The affected models include:

  • 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban
  • 2022 GMC Yukon and Yukon XL
  • 2022 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV

Transport Canada explained the transmission defect: "On certain vehicles, the transmission control valve body could wear and lose pressure. If this happens, the transmission could shift harshly and cause the wheels to lock up." The agency further noted that suddenly locking wheels could lead to loss of vehicle control and increased crash potential.

GM will notify owners by mail and advise them to visit dealerships for transmission control module software updates. This software enhancement will detect excess wear before wheel lock-up occurs. If detected, the transmission will be limited to fifth gear to prevent lock-up, with service engine lights and instrument panel messages alerting drivers to the issue.

Safety Protocols and Owner Responsibilities

Both manufacturers have established clear protocols for addressing these safety concerns. Vehicle owners should:

  1. Watch for recall notification letters in the mail
  2. Schedule appointments with authorized dealerships promptly
  3. Follow all recommended inspection and repair procedures
  4. Monitor vehicles for warning signs between notification and repair

Transport Canada maintains detailed recall databases that consumers can access to check if their vehicles are affected. These recalls underscore the importance of regular vehicle maintenance and prompt response to manufacturer communications regarding safety issues.
