France's health ministry confirmed on Wednesday that a doctor who recently worked in the Democratic Republic of Congo has tested positive for the Ebola virus. The announcement marks the first confirmed case of Ebola in France during the current outbreak in Central Africa.
Details of the Case
The doctor, whose identity has not been disclosed, returned to France from Congo and sought medical attention after developing symptoms consistent with Ebola. Tests conducted by the French health ministry confirmed the presence of the virus. The patient is currently receiving treatment in a specialized isolation unit at a hospital in Paris.
Health authorities are tracing contacts to prevent potential spread. The ministry stated that the risk to the general public remains low, as Ebola is transmitted through direct contact with bodily fluids and not through casual contact.
Outbreak Context
The current Ebola outbreak in Congo was declared by the World Health Organization in April 2026. As of mid-June, more than 200 confirmed cases and over 100 deaths have been reported, according to the latest situation report. Efforts to contain the outbreak have been hampered by conflict and community mistrust in affected regions.
French health officials emphasized that the patient is being managed according to strict protocols, including isolation and the use of personal protective equipment by medical staff. The ministry also noted that Ebola treatment centers in France are equipped to handle such cases.
