Garry Swanson, a Calgary resident, has developed a new mobile application called My CareCycle: Parkinson's to assist individuals living with Parkinson's disease in managing their daily routines, medication schedules, and symptom tracking. The app was inspired by Swanson's years of experience helping his wife, Fiona, navigate the challenges of the progressive neurological disorder.
App features and development
My CareCycle: Parkinson's is designed to help users organize medication timings, monitor symptom fluctuations, and record daily changes that are critical for managing Parkinson's. According to Swanson, the app aims to simplify the complex care routines that many patients and caregivers face, providing reminders and a centralized platform for health data.
The app includes features such as customizable medication alerts, a symptom diary, and the ability to share reports with healthcare providers. Swanson, who is not a medical professional but a caregiver, spent months consulting with neurologists and patients to ensure the tool meets real-world needs.
Impact on the Parkinson's community
Parkinson's disease affects approximately 100,000 Canadians, according to Parkinson Canada. The condition often requires precise timing of medications to manage motor symptoms, and missing a dose can lead to significant setbacks. Swanson noted that the app helps reduce the cognitive load on patients and caregivers. "It's about giving people back some control and peace of mind," he said in an interview with Calgary News.
Early users have reported positive feedback, with one tester stating that the app "has made a huge difference in tracking my symptoms and communicating with my doctor." The app is currently available for download on iOS and Android platforms.
