A 53-year-old man from Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, has been arrested and charged with multiple counts of historic sexual assault and sexual interference involving a child. The alleged offences occurred between 2001 and 2004, according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).

Charges and arrest details

The RCMP announced the charges on July 3, 2026. The suspect, whose name has not been released to protect the victim's identity, was taken into custody without incident. He faces charges including sexual assault, sexual interference, and invitation to sexual touching. The victim, who was under the age of 16 at the time of the alleged offences, came forward to police in 2025, prompting an investigation by the Yarmouth RCMP's Historical Crimes Unit.

Police have not disclosed the relationship between the accused and the victim, but confirmed they were known to each other. The accused was released on conditions pending a court appearance in Yarmouth on August 10, 2026.

Investigation and victim support

RCMP Corporal Guillaume Tremblay stated, “We commend the survivor for their courage in coming forward. Our investigators worked diligently to gather evidence and ensure a thorough investigation.” He added that the RCMP encourages any other victims of historic sexual offences to report them, regardless of how much time has passed.

Police are not seeking additional suspects in this case. The RCMP emphasized that they provide support services for victims, including referrals to local victim services organizations.

Broader context

This case is part of a growing number of historic sexual assault investigations in Nova Scotia. The RCMP's Historical Crimes Unit has been actively pursuing cases where victims come forward years or decades after the alleged incidents. In 2025, the unit reported a 15% increase in reports of historic sexual offences compared to the previous year.

Legal experts note that changes to Canada's statute of limitations for sexual offences, which were eliminated in 2018, have allowed more survivors to seek justice. “Historic cases are challenging due to fading memories and lost evidence, but advances in forensic science and victim support have improved outcomes,” said Halifax-based criminal lawyer Sarah MacLeod.

The accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. His next court appearance is scheduled for August 10, 2026, in Yarmouth Provincial Court.
