Toronto's BMO Field is returning to its original configuration as temporary seating installed for the 2026 FIFA World Cup is being removed. The stadium, which hosted several matches during the tournament, is reverting to its standard capacity of approximately 30,000 seats.
Temporary Expansion for World Cup
The temporary seating was added to increase BMO Field's capacity to meet FIFA requirements for the World Cup, allowing it to host matches with larger crowds. The expansion included modular seating sections that were installed in the north and south end zones, as well as additional premium seating areas.
According to a spokesperson for Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE), which operates the stadium, the removal process is proceeding on schedule and is expected to be completed by the end of July. The temporary structures are being dismantled and removed from the site, with the field returning to its original layout.
Impact on Future Events
The removal of the temporary seating will affect upcoming events at BMO Field, including Toronto FC matches and other sporting events. The stadium will return to its pre-World Cup capacity, which may impact ticket availability and pricing for future events.
"We are pleased to return BMO Field to its original state, ensuring that it remains a premier venue for soccer and other events in Toronto," said the MLSE spokesperson. "The temporary seating served its purpose during the World Cup, and we are now focused on the next chapter for the stadium."
City Praised for World Cup Handling
Toronto residents and visitors have shared positive experiences regarding the city's handling of the FIFA games. The city implemented extensive transportation and security measures to accommodate the influx of fans, which were widely praised.
"Toronto did an incredible job hosting the World Cup matches," said Siobhan Morris, a local journalist. "The city was vibrant, the transportation system handled the crowds well, and the atmosphere at BMO Field was electric."
The temporary seating removal marks the end of an era for BMO Field, which underwent significant renovations to host the World Cup. The stadium will now return to its regular operations, with events scheduled for the remainder of the year.
