The trade landscape for Edmonton Oilers defenseman Darnell Nurse has shifted significantly after the Philadelphia Flyers made a decisive move for Zach Werenski. While Nurse had the Flyers on his trade list, the deal for the Norris Trophy winner appears to have removed Philly as a viable option, leaving the Boston Bruins as the most likely destination.
Flyers pivot to Werenski, Nurse's options narrow
According to Oilers beat writer Jim Matheson, Nurse's trade list included the Flyers, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Boston Bruins, with the Hamilton, Ontario native preferring an Eastern Conference team for family reasons. However, the Flyers' acquisition of Werenski, who informed the Columbus Blue Jackets he would not re-sign beyond his 2028 contract, has effectively ended Philadelphia's interest in Nurse. The Penguins remain a possibility, but the Bruins are emerging as the frontrunner.
Bruins need left defense, Nurse could partner McAvoy
The Bruins are actively seeking a left-shot defenseman to partner Charlie McAvoy, having relied on AHLer Jonathan Aspirot for much of last season. Nurse, a 31-year-old lefty, carries a $9.25 million cap hit for four more seasons, which the Oilers are eager to shed for cap flexibility. Boston could offer defenseman Mason Lohrei, who has a $3.25 million cap hit for one more year before becoming a restricted free agent. However, Lohrei is considered a third-pairing player and not a staunch defender, having converted from forward in his teens.
Potential Lindholm swap or other destinations
Another possibility is a straight swap for Bruins defenseman Hampus Lindholm, who is also 32 and left-handed. Lindholm makes $6.5 million for four more years, providing the Oilers with $2.75 million in cap savings. However, Lindholm has been injury-prone in recent seasons, while Nurse has been durable. The Anaheim Ducks have also emerged as a potential suitor, but they already have young left-shot defensemen like Jackson LaCombe and Pavel Mintyukov, and may prioritize a right-shot defenseman after trading Olen Zellweger to Buffalo and dealing John Carlson's UFA rights to Carolina.
Oilers need deal before July 1 for cap planning
Oilers general manager Stan Bowman has urged Nurse to expand his trade list, with a deal ideally completed before July 1 to clarify the team's cap space for free agency. The Oilers are looking to save cap room to address other needs, such as a top-six forward. Nurse is the second-longest tenured Oiler, but his contract has become a burden under the salary cap. If the Bruins can retain some salary to bring Nurse's cap hit down to around $7 million, a trade could materialize.
