The YWCA Calgary has launched a new fund aimed at helping women fleeing domestic abuse and poverty, backed by a $1-million donation from the family of Kathy and Richard Sendall. The Stand with Her Fund was introduced at the organization's 115th annual general meeting on Tuesday, designed to address priority needs quickly and effectively.
Flexible Funding for Immediate Needs
YWCA Calgary CEO Talia Bell emphasized the fund's flexibility, stating, "This type of giving allows us to centre our work in listening and to respond quickly as our community's needs evolve. Thanks to this fund, we're able to stand alongside our community and respond in ways that are meaningful, timely and rooted in what people truly need."
The fund will primarily focus on addressing gender-based abuse and domestic violence through collaboration with the Calgary Police Service and other agencies such as FearIsNotLove. Bell noted that the money could be used for shelter beds, supporting technology, and scaling solutions with broader impact.
Prevention and Root Causes
Another key focus is prevention by targeting the root causes of abuse, which Bell said are growing alongside Calgary's population. "We know the community is growing towards that 2 million mark and so too are the social issues … it's about being responsive and adaptive," she said.
The Sendall family expressed confidence in the YWCA's ability to use the funds effectively. "Supporting the Stand With Her Fund is our way of placing trust directly in the hands of the people doing the work," they said. "We believe in YWCA Calgary's ability to meet women where they are and help them move toward safety, stability and create a foundation of prosperity for women, their children and our community."
Broad Range of Services
YWCA Calgary offers a variety of programs and services, including parent and financial counselling, language education, housing, crisis shelters, and childcare. Last year, the organization helped 10,600 people. Bell hopes the donation will inspire similar giving, providing financial predictability and stability for the future.
