The Stelmach Community Health Centre officially opened its doors in southeast Edmonton on June 23, 2026, marking a significant milestone in regional healthcare infrastructure. Named after former Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach, the facility aims to serve the rapidly growing population in the area with a range of medical services.
Facility Details and Services
The centre is designed to offer comprehensive primary care, including family medicine, preventive health services, and chronic disease management. According to Alberta Health Services, the facility will also house laboratory and diagnostic imaging services, reducing the need for residents to travel to other parts of the city for basic tests.
Located in the southeast quadrant of Edmonton, the health centre is part of a broader strategy to decentralize healthcare and improve access in underserved neighborhoods. The region has seen substantial residential development in recent years, prompting demand for local medical facilities.
Political and Community Significance
Ed Stelmach, who served as Premier of Alberta from 2006 to 2011, was present at the opening ceremony. In his remarks, he highlighted the importance of community-based healthcare and thanked the province for investing in the project. “This centre is a testament to what we can achieve when we work together for the well-being of Albertans,” Stelmach said.
The naming of the facility after Stelmach was approved by the provincial government following a recommendation from a community advisory committee. Stelmach is credited with advancing healthcare infrastructure during his tenure, including the expansion of rural hospitals and health centres.
Impact on Local Healthcare
The Stelmach Community Health Centre is expected to serve approximately 50,000 residents in the surrounding area. It will employ over 100 healthcare professionals, including doctors, nurses, and allied health staff. The centre also includes a pharmacy and mental health counseling services.
Alberta Health Minister Jason Copping stated at the opening, “This facility represents a $45 million investment in the health of Edmontonians. It will reduce wait times and provide integrated care close to home.” The centre is part of a provincial plan to open 15 new community health centres by 2030.
Construction and Design
Construction began in 2024 and was completed on schedule. The building features energy-efficient design, including solar panels and a green roof, aligning with Alberta’s climate goals. The centre also includes a community meeting room for health education programs.
Local residents expressed enthusiasm about the opening. “We’ve been waiting for this for years. It’s wonderful to have a clinic so close to home,” said Maria Torres, a resident of the nearby neighborhood. The centre will operate seven days a week, with extended evening hours to accommodate working families.
