A gathering was held at the Ken Brown Recovery Home in Sault Ste. Marie this week, marking 50 years since the facility opened its doors to people struggling with addiction. The event celebrated the centre's long history of helping individuals regain control of their lives.
Milestone celebration
Staff, alumni, and community members came together to commemorate the anniversary, reflecting on the thousands of lives impacted over five decades. The Ken Brown Recovery Home has been a cornerstone of addiction treatment in Northern Ontario since its inception in 1976.
According to a spokesperson for the centre, the facility has helped over 10,000 individuals through its residential treatment programs. The anniversary event included speeches from former clients who shared their recovery journeys.
Ongoing impact
The home offers a 28-day residential program focused on abstinence-based recovery, along with aftercare support. It is named after Ken Brown, a local businessman and philanthropist who championed addiction recovery services in the region.
“This place saved my life,” said one former client at the gathering. “Without the support and structure here, I wouldn’t be where I am today.”
The centre continues to operate with funding from the Ontario government and community donations, serving approximately 200 clients annually.
