Navigating the World Cup Overlap
The festival runs from June 19 to July 5, coinciding with the World Cup and FIFA Fan Fest. Executive director Nina Horvath of Coastal Jazz noted the difficulty of negotiating FIFA restrictions and rising costs. "There is always discomfort bringing in major global events like the World Cup," she said.
Economic Hurdles
The weak Canadian dollar has added a 30 percent hit to expenses, further straining the budget. Despite this, Horvath emphasized the festival's commitment to accessibility.
Star-Studded Lineup
Rising star Tomoki Sanders performs with the Todd Stewart Trio on June 25 at The Birdhouse. Other highlights include Keyon Harrold's tribute to Miles Davis on June 30 and Isaiah Collier's Collier Plays Coltrane on July 1. The Cellar Live 25th Anniversary show on July 3 features Cory Weeds' Little Big Band.
Free and Accessible Events
The festival offers free performances, including the Downtown Jazz weekend at the Vancouver Art Gallery on June 27 and 28. Horvath stressed the importance of low-cost options: "We want music to be accessible to all economic levels."
