Calgary police have confirmed that a seven-year-old boy was murdered by his mother, who then died by suicide in a northeast home. The tragic incident was discovered Wednesday afternoon when officers conducted a welfare check at a residence on Templegreen Place N.E.
Autopsy Confirms Homicide
An autopsy performed Thursday determined that the boy's death was a homicide, with his 47-year-old mother identified as the perpetrator. Police stated they are not seeking any other suspects and are withholding the names of the victims to protect the family's privacy.
Staff Sgt. Mark Rahn of the Calgary Police Service Homicide Unit described the event as a tragic and traumatic incident that affects not only the family but also the broader community.
Second Such Tragedy in Two Months
This incident marks the second time in two months that children have died at the hands of a parent in Calgary. In late April, two children aged three and five were found dead inside a vehicle in North Haven. Their father was charged with first-degree murder after turning himself in to police.
On Wednesday, Calgary Police Chief Katie McLellan stated that investigators are focused on understanding the circumstances that led to the latest deaths. She emphasized the importance of fully investigating the situation and thanked the community for their support and patience.

Police reiterated that family violence remains a complex problem requiring collective action. It can occur in any relationship, including between intimate partners, parents and children, siblings, and extended family members, affecting people of all ages and backgrounds.
