According to NHL insider Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic, Edmonton Oilers forward Jack Roslovic is likely to test the free agent market. The 29-year-old, who is an unrestricted free agent on July 1, has been a consistent 20-goal scorer but may not return to the Oilers next season.
Roslovic's Journey with the Oilers
Roslovic signed with the Oilers on October 8 after initially turning down a better offer from the team on July 1. He has played for four teams in the past three seasons, showing his versatility but also his lack of stability. The Oilers have appreciated his contributions, but LeBrun notes that he is likely headed to the open market.
Why the Oilers Might Move On
While Roslovic possesses impressive offensive skills—great hands, speed, a strong shot, and playmaking ability—he never secured a top-six role in Edmonton. With young forwards like Ike Howard, Quinn Hutson, and Viljami Marjala developing in the AHL, the Oilers have cheaper internal options. Additionally, Matt Savoie has surpassed Roslovic on the depth chart and is expected to score 20 or more goals next season.
Playoff Struggles
Roslovic struggled in the 2026 playoffs against the Anaheim Ducks, recording just one assist in six games. His finesse game was less effective in the postseason when referees allow more physical play. This has raised concerns about his value in high-stakes situations.
Cap Management
In a salary-cap world, overpaying for a veteran player past his peak is risky. Roslovic may continue to score 20 goals for a few more years, but his production could decline rapidly. The Oilers could instead rely on younger, cheaper players who may provide similar offense with better defense.
Ultimately, letting Roslovic walk seems prudent for Edmonton, allowing them to invest in their future while maintaining cap flexibility.
