Calgary Co-op to Shutter Hamptons and Sage Hill Locations in March 2026
Calgary Co-op Closes Two Stores in 2026

Calgary Co-op has confirmed the impending closure of two of its prominent locations in the city, marking a significant shift in the cooperative's retail footprint. The Hamptons and Sage Hill stores are scheduled to cease operations on March 28, 2026, affecting not only the food stores but also the associated Hamptons Wine Spirits Beer and Cannabis outlets.

Economic Factors Drive Decision

In an official statement released on Friday, Calgary Co-op attributed the closures to evolving economic and market conditions. The organization emphasized that while such decisions are never taken lightly, they are necessary to align with member needs and ensure long-term sustainability.

"We truly appreciate the Hamptons and Sage Hill team's efforts to improve sales, serve our members and revitalize these stores," the statement read. "We are working closely with the union and our team members to ensure affected employees are supported."

Strategic Reallocation of Resources

The closures are part of a broader strategic realignment that will free up capital for more sustainable stores and projects. Notable initiatives include the newly re-developed North Hill location, which is set to open in early 2026, and a planned Marda Loop store scheduled for 2027.

This move follows recent expansion efforts, such as the opening of a Cochrane location in September 2025 and an Oakridge store in 2024. However, it also continues a trend of consolidation, as the cooperative closed two north Calgary stores in 2023.

Customer Impact and Pharmacy Transfers

For pharmacy customers at the affected locations, patient files will be automatically transferred to the nearby Creekside store. Members retain the option to request transfers to their preferred alternative location, ensuring continuity of care.

Community Reaction and Member Sentiment

Longtime Hamptons Co-op shoppers Leslie and David Ruether expressed disappointment at the news, having been customers since the store first opened. They noted that their shopping patterns shifted after the company changed suppliers in 2020, leading to increased prices.

"We've been shopping here for a very long time, and it's very disappointing," David said. "It's surprising after Beddington closed, and now this one and Sage Hill."

Leslie added, "I feel very bad for the staff. The same ladies have been there for ages." Despite their disappointment, they acknowledged they were "not entirely surprised" given the recent changes.

Looking Forward

Calgary Co-op's statement concluded by emphasizing the need to meet members where they are and focus on locations where their unique product and service offerings can be most meaningful and profitable. This strategic pivot reflects the challenging retail landscape and the cooperative's commitment to adapting to market demands while supporting its workforce through transitions.
