The Sundre Pro Rodeo and Race Association has canceled its 2026 parade, citing escalating online harassment targeting volunteers after a float entry was initially denied. The decision was announced via Facebook, where the association detailed that both parade and rodeo volunteers faced personal attacks, harassment, and abusive messages.
After denying a float a spot in the parade, the association received feedback from both sides and reconsidered its decision. It apologized to the float organizers and offered them a place in the parade, but the online hostility only intensified. The association stressed that the cancellation is not a statement on any political viewpoint, movement, or cause, and that it respects differing views.
Volunteers Under Fire
“These volunteers are members of our community… They are not paid employees, nor public figures,” the Facebook statement read. “They are neighbours, friends, parents, business owners and community members who volunteer their time because they care deeply about this event and our town.”
The association emphasized that disagreement is normal and healthy, but harassment, intimidation, and personal attacks against volunteers are not. The harassment began affecting all aspects of the parade, with participants and float organizers backing out due to concerns over animosity. As a result, the association decided to cancel the parade to refocus on the community event.
Rodeo Events to Proceed
All rodeo events will continue as scheduled. The association thanked its sponsors, participants, and supporters for bringing the rodeo to life. “Most importantly, we thank the dedicated volunteers whose commitment has helped make the Sundre Pro Rodeo a proud community tradition for generations,” the statement concluded.
