In a significant update for privacy-conscious users and developers, the cybersecurity company Surfshark has announced the integration of its dedicated IP feature directly into its graphical user interface (GUI) application for Linux operating systems. This move, confirmed on December 23, 2025, makes Surfshark one of the few VPN providers to offer this functionality natively on the Linux platform.
What a Dedicated IP Means for Linux Users
Until now, Linux enthusiasts using Surfshark could only access a dedicated IP address through a browser extension. The new integration within the main application simplifies the process, granting users more direct control and flexibility. Justas Pukys, Senior Product Manager at Surfshark, emphasized the improvement, stating the expansion allows Linux users to "effortlessly utilize a dedicated IP through the application, offering more flexibility and an enhanced online experience."
A dedicated IP provides a personal, static internet address, unlike the shared IPs common in most VPN services. This offers key advantages: it creates a more stable connection and dramatically reduces the frequency of disruptive human verification requests, such as CAPTCHA puzzles ("Select images with traffic lights"). This happens because website traffic appears consistent, as it originates from a single, identifiable user.
Enhanced Security and Global Server Access
Beyond convenience, a dedicated IP strengthens security for activities that require consistent identification. This is crucial for accessing online banking portals, connecting to remote work servers, or managing other sensitive services that may flag or block traffic from shared VPN IP addresses.
Surfshark's dedicated IP service is available in 20 global locations, including a key Canadian node in Toronto. Other major cities offered are San Jose, London, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Paris, Tokyo, Sydney, and São Paulo, among others. This wide selection allows users to choose a static IP in a region relevant to their needs.
Platform Availability and How to Get It
The dedicated IP feature is now uniformly available across Surfshark's ecosystem: on Linux, Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, Apple TV, and its browser extensions for Chrome, Firefox, and Edge. It supports high-speed protocols like WireGuard® for optimal performance.
It is important to note that this feature is a paid add-on to any existing Surfshark subscription bundle. Users interested in upgrading can purchase it by visiting their Surfshark account, navigating to the "Dedicated IP" tab, and selecting their preferred location from the list.
Headquartered in the Netherlands, Surfshark is a recognized cybersecurity provider offering a suite of privacy tools, including an audited VPN, antivirus software, and a data leak alert system. This update reinforces its commitment to catering to the often-overlooked but technically proficient Linux user base, providing them with enterprise-grade privacy features.
