British Columbia Premier David Eby announced on Thursday that OpenAI has agreed to issue a public apology for the role its ChatGPT platform played in the Tumbler Ridge mass shooting. The announcement came after a meeting between Eby, Tumbler Ridge Mayor Darryl Krakowka, and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.
Details of the Tragedy and AI Involvement
On February 10, 2026, 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar killed her mother and 11-year-old stepbrother before proceeding to Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, where she opened fire, resulting in the deaths of three 12-year-old girls, a 12-year-old boy, a 13-year-old boy, and an educational assistant. Subsequent investigations revealed that OpenAI employees had flagged Van Rootselaar's ChatGPT account in June 2025 for queries related to mass shootings. Although her account was banned, the company failed to report the activities, and it was later discovered she had accessed a second account.
Premier Eby's Stance and Call for Federal Action
During the media briefing, Premier Eby emphasized that while an apology is necessary, it is insufficient on its own. "Everybody on the call recognized that an apology is nowhere near sufficient, but also that it is completely necessary," Eby stated. He highlighted the need for Ottawa to establish minimum reporting standards for AI companies, arguing that inconsistent practices among tech firms are unacceptable. "It's not acceptable that there are inconsistent standards between companies. It's not acceptable that it's up to the companies about whether or not to report. That needs to change," Eby asserted.
Collaboration with Tumbler Ridge and Broader Context
Mayor Krakowka will work with OpenAI to ensure that any public statements are made appropriately to avoid re-traumatizing the community. This development follows Altman's meeting with federal AI Minister Evan Solomon, where OpenAI agreed to allow Canadian experts into its offices and implement safety changes. However, Eby believes these measures fall short of what is required to prevent future incidents.

Conservative MLA Larry Neufeld, representing Tumbler Ridge, expressed concerns that the focus on AI might overshadow underlying issues. He called for a full public inquiry into the tragedy, citing failures in the mental health system. "I'm left with concerns that the root cause of the issue is not being focused on. And I believe very clearly that the complete and utter failure of the mental health system in this province has allowed two mass casualty events to happen in this province in 12 months," Neufeld commented. He acknowledged AI's role but stressed it should not be the primary focus.
