Darren Raddysh says playing for Maple Leafs 'means the world' after trade from Lightning
Raddysh: Maple Leafs move 'means the world' after Lightning trade

Darren Raddysh, the newest member of the Toronto Maple Leafs, said Monday that joining his hometown team was a 'no-brainer' and that fulfilling his late father's dream 'means the world.' The Caledon, Ontario native was acquired in a sign-and-trade from the Tampa Bay Lightning on Friday, with Toronto sending a fifth-round pick in the 2026 draft to Tampa Bay.

Emotional homecoming for Raddysh

Raddysh, 30, spoke to media via Zoom on Monday, reflecting on his childhood as a Leafs fan and the special bond he shared with his father, Dwayne, who passed away in March after a battle with cancer. 'Seeing the smile he had on his face when we would go to the games, and how much joy it brought to me and my brother,' Raddysh said, 'it's something that I cherished and I know my brother did as well. To be able to play here every night, it's definitely one of his dreams, and I'm happy that I can make that happen for him.'

Contract details and negotiations

Raddysh signed an eight-year contract with an average annual value of $8.5 million US, making him a cornerstone of the Leafs' top defensive pairing. Talks between Raddysh's agent, Craig Oster, and the Leafs intensified last Thursday, culminating in the early Friday trade. 'I like the roster,' Raddysh said. 'They have a lot of exceptional players. I'm fortunate to be a part of that.' He also praised new head coach Jim Hiller, noting his success with the Los Angeles Kings.

Late bloomer finds his stride

Raddysh's offensive production exploded in 2025-26, tallying 70 points in 73 games — matching his total from the previous two seasons combined. He credited increased opportunity for his breakout. 'Getting the opportunity to play,' Raddysh said. 'I was in and out of the lineup. When I was playing (before), I was playing as seventh defenceman. The power play, and getting to show what I can do is probably one of the biggest (reasons) for this last year.' A late bloomer, Raddysh spent time in the AHL with Rockford, Hartford and Syracuse after a strong junior career with the Erie Otters.

Part of larger Leafs overhaul

The acquisition of Raddysh is one of several recent moves by general manager John Chayka, including trading for defenceman Emil Andrae from the Philadelphia Flyers and hiring Hiller as coach. The Leafs are also expected to select winger Gavin McKenna with the No. 1 overall pick in the upcoming draft. Veteran defenceman Morgan Rielly could be traded as Chayka continues reshaping the roster. Raddysh expressed excitement about playing in front of home fans: 'It means the world. To be able to play in front of the home fans, it's awesome. A lot of friends and family have already texted me and are excited. Playing in Toronto is something you always dreamed of as a kid, and especially playing in the GTHL. You're always watching the Leafs games on Saturday nights. It's super exciting to get that opportunity.'
