Calgary's Cavalry FC commenced their Canadian Premier League season with a triumphant 2-1 away victory against Pacific FC on Sunday, securing three crucial points in their opening match. The win at Starlight Stadium in Langford, British Columbia, represented a significant milestone for the club, marking their first-ever victory in a season opener and their inaugural win during the month of April.
Manager Wheeldon Jr. Praises Team Performance
Cavalry FC head coach and general manager Tommy Wheeldon Jr. expressed satisfaction with his team's performance, highlighting the contributions from both seasoned players and new additions. "I think it's a really solid road win," Wheeldon Jr. stated. "And it was contributed from the guys that played for us in seasons past and the new guys that came in and injected that bit of energy when we needed it."
The manager acknowledged the blend of excitement and nervous energy present during the match, emphasizing the importance of securing three points early in the campaign. "I think when you can come out with three points in games like that, you can only build from it, because it gives you that little bit of confidence," he added.

The strike originated from a short corner kick delivered by Toby Warschewski, which Paton collected at the edge of the penalty area before firing a near-post shot past Pacific goalkeeper Sean Melvin.
"It was a little bit off the cuff," Paton explained regarding the play. "We worked a lot on set-pieces. I just noticed that Pacific was trying to push two men high on the corner kicks. So it's a little bit of a game of cat and mouse."
The midfielder expressed his desire to increase his goal contributions this season and praised the team environment. "I can say it's been enjoyable," Paton remarked. "Really good group, really excited to be in Calgary, competing and looking forward to the season."

The match also featured a historic moment for the Canadian Premier League, with Cavalry FC successfully utilizing the league's new Football Video Support system. The Cavs called for their debut coach's challenge in the 31st minute when Jay Herdman was deemed fouled in the penalty area by Pacific's Tristan Marshall.
Following video review, the call was overturned, awarding Cavalry FC a penalty kick that Warschewski converted past Melvin. This marked the first-ever successful implementation of the FVS challenge system since its introduction during the off-season.
