The Ottawa Senators are poised to intensify their pursuit of forward Mason McTavish from the Anaheim Ducks, according to league sources, after trading captain Brady Tkachuk to the Florida Panthers on Sunday. The move signals a major roster overhaul under president of hockey operations and general manager Steve Staios.
Senators Acquire Draft Capital in Tkachuk Trade
Staios dealt Tkachuk to the Panthers after it became clear the captain would not re-sign with Ottawa when his contract expired. In return, the Senators received first-round picks (No. 9 and No. 25) and a second-round selection. The club also retains the No. 32 pick but cannot trade it. Staios stated, This was not a decision we took lightly, but ultimately we did what we felt was best for the long-term future of our hockey club. We now possess cap space and draft capital and will be actively working to improve our roster.
Targeting a Top-Six Forward to Play with Tim Stutzle
A league executive told the Ottawa Citizen on Sunday night that the Senators are expected to use those assets to acquire a top-six forward who can play alongside centre Tim Stutzle. The club has been seeking such a player for two years, but the market is thin. They aren’t going to attract any free agents … there are no free agents,
the executive noted.
Mason McTavish Emerges as Prime Target
McTavish, 22, is coming off a difficult season with 17 goals and 24 assists for 41 points in 75 games. He was scratched for two games during Anaheim’s playoff run by coach Joel Quenneville, casting doubt on his future with the Ducks. McTavish has five years remaining on a contract paying $7 million U.S. per season through 2030-31. His father, Dale, was one of Staios’s first hires in Ottawa in 2023 as a pro scout, creating a family link.
The Senators now possess the first-round picks that the Ducks covet in return. Ottawa could offer either the No. 9 or No. 25 selection, along with a prospect, to secure McTavish. The Montreal Canadiens and Philadelphia Flyers are also reportedly in the mix.
Senators Hold Multiple Draft Picks
With the NHL draft set for Friday night, Ottawa holds the No. 9, No. 25, and No. 32 selections. Staios indicated he will be active in trade discussions this week. The club is focused on adding scoring help to a roster that lost its captain and top offensive threat.
