Suspect injured in police shooting on Deerfoot Trail

An attempted arrest on Deerfoot Trail near Memorial Drive Sunday afternoon escalated into a police shooting, sending one person to hospital. The Calgary Police Service said officers were called to the busy freeway shortly after 4 p.m. by concerned drivers who reported seeing a dangerous driver.

Officer-involved shooting during arrest

“When officers attempted to take the driver into custody, an officer-involved shooting occurred,” police said in a statement. One person was taken to hospital, but the extent of their injuries was not immediately known. No officers were injured.

Road closures and investigation

Road closures remain in effect in the area as investigators continue their work. The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT), the province’s police watchdog agency, has been called to investigate the incident. Calgary Police advised motorists to use alternative routes, tweeting: “Deerfoot Tr between 16 Av and Memorial Dr is closed in both directions.”
