Rookie Clattenburg Brings Grit to Oilers in Debut Against Panthers
Oilers Rookie Clattenburg Brings New Grit in Debut

Edmonton Oilers rookie Connor Clattenburg made an unexpectedly strong first impression in his NHL debut, bringing a welcome dose of grit and energy to the lineup during a 6-3 victory over the Florida Panthers on November 23, 2025.

A Debut to Remember

While the original plan was for the 20-year-old forward to serve as a temporary injury replacement for players like Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Curtis Lazar, Clattenburg seized his limited opportunity. In just 5 minutes and 47 seconds of ice time across nine shifts, he managed to be a noticeable presence on the ice.

His performance was far from quiet. Clattenburg effectively moved the puck out of the defensive zone and generated significant offensive chances. On one notable shift with superstar Connor McDavid, he fired two Grade A shots on net. He also roared down the wing later in the game, unleashing a hard shot that nearly beat the Panthers' goalie stick-side.

More Than Just Offense

Beyond his offensive flashes, it was Clattenburg's physical play and tenacity that truly captured attention. He threw hits, battled fiercely in front of the opponent's net, and showed no hesitation in engaging with the play.

The most defining moment of his debut came in the game's final moments with the score 6-3. When teammate Andrew Mangiapane was being roughed up by two Panthers players, Clattenburg immediately jumped into the fray. He grabbed Florida's tough guy, A.J. Greer, from behind, putting him in a headlock and pulling off his helmet. This act of defending a teammate sparked a scrum and even drew a swing from a displeased Greer.

Instant Praise from Oilers Analysts

The reaction from the Oilers' faithful and analysts was swift and positive. On the Cult of Hockey podcast, Kurt Leavins praised the rookie's performance, noting, "He was really good... He displayed pretty decent hands tonight." Leavins specifically highlighted the net drive, the near-miss wrist shot, and the willingness to "get his hands dirty" in the tussle with Greer.

Former Oilers defenseman Jason Strudwick, on the Got Yer Back podcast, drew an intriguing comparison regarding Clattenburg's demeanor. "What I think was beautiful is that at the end of the game, he was not shying away at all... I know who reminds me of him is Corey Perry. Corey would be looking for it. He's not shying away from the scrums, he's not shying away from anything in there," Strudwick said, while clarifying he wasn't comparing their point totals, but rather their intent and fearlessness on the ice.

Although his long-term role with the team remains as an injury call-up, Connor Clattenburg's debut demonstrated that he possesses the specific brand of sandpaper and skill that the Edmonton Oilers can use, making him a player to watch as the season progresses.
