The Nanaimo Clippers have drawn first blood in the British Columbia Hockey League final, defeating the Brooks Bandits 3-1 on the road Friday night. The victory gives the Clippers a 1-0 series lead as the best-of-seven championship series shifts to Nanaimo for Game 2.
The Clippers came out strong, scoring two goals in the first period to seize control early. Brooks managed to cut the lead to 2-1 in the second period, but Nanaimo added an empty-net goal in the final minute to seal the win.
Goaltender Zach Bennett was stellar for the Clippers, making 32 saves to keep the high-powered Bandits offense at bay. Bennett's performance drew praise from head coach Rob Boyd, who highlighted the team's defensive discipline.
"We knew Brooks would come hard, but our guys stuck to the game plan and executed well," Boyd said after the game. "Zach was outstanding when we needed him, and we capitalized on our chances."
The Bandits, who finished the regular season with the best record in the BCHL, will look to rebound in Game 2. Head coach Ryan Papaioannou acknowledged the need for adjustments.
"We didn't have our best effort tonight, but it's a long series," Papaioannou said. "We'll regroup and be ready for Game 2."
The series continues Sunday in Nanaimo, where the Clippers will aim to build on their momentum and take a commanding 2-0 lead.
