Montreal Canadiens goaltender Jakub Dobes delivered a stellar performance to lead his team to a decisive Game 7 victory over the Buffalo Sabres on Monday night. The young netminder, who had faced criticism earlier in the series, rebounded with a composed and confident showing, stopping 31 of 33 shots to secure a 4-2 win at KeyBank Center.
Dobes Delivers Under Pressure
Dobes, who had been pulled in Game 5 after allowing three goals on nine shots, showed remarkable resilience. He was particularly sharp in the second period, when the Sabres pressed hard to tie the game. His glove save on Sabres winger Jack Quinn midway through the frame drew chants of 'Dobes! Dobes!' from the traveling Montreal faithful.
'I just tried to bounce forward, not backward,' Dobes said postgame. 'The guys in front of me were incredible. They blocked shots, cleared rebounds, and made my job easier.'
Canadiens Capitalize on Chances
Montreal opened the scoring early in the first period when captain Nick Suzuki deflected a point shot past Sabres goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen. The Canadiens extended their lead to 3-1 in the second on goals by Cole Caufield and Juraj Slafkovsky. Buffalo pulled within one early in the third, but an empty-net goal by Brendan Gallagher sealed the win.
The victory propels Montreal into the second round of the playoffs, where they will face the top-seeded Boston Bruins. For the Sabres, the loss marks another early exit in what has been a frustrating decade of playoff futility.
Series Recap
The Sabres had forced a Game 7 with a gutsy 3-2 overtime win in Montreal two nights earlier. However, Dobes' resurgence proved too much to overcome. Buffalo coach Don Granato praised his team's effort but acknowledged the Canadiens' goaltending made the difference.
'We had our chances, but Dobes was outstanding tonight,' Granato said. 'He made the saves when they needed them most.'
The Canadiens now look to carry this momentum into their next series, with Dobes firmly established as their postseason starter.
