Four Canadian Golfers Survive Cut at Prestigious Players Championship

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — The 2026 Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass has seen six Canadian competitors begin the tournament, with four successfully advancing to weekend play after the 36-hole cut eliminated two from the field. This represents a strong showing for Canadian golf on one of the PGA Tour's most challenging stages.

Corey Conners Leads Canadian Charge with Impressive Performance

Corey Conners, Canada's top-ranked golfer, finds himself tied for fourth place at eight-under par after posting rounds of 69 and 67. Following some recent inconsistent results, Conners appears to have rediscovered his exceptional ball-striking form this week. Through two rounds, he ranks among the tournament leaders in driving accuracy, having successfully found 22 of 28 fairways. His approach shots have been particularly effective, gaining more than six strokes against the field.

"I feel free out there with the putter this week," Conners told Postmedia. "It's always nice playing with Jason Day, who rolls it the best of anyone I've ever seen. I've been trying to take a little bit of what he does on the greens and throw it into my game. The ballstriking has been sharp but seeing some putts roll in is even better."

Conners expressed particular appreciation for the tee-to-green challenges presented by TPC Sawgrass, noting it aligns perfectly with his strengths as a player.

Other Canadian Competitors Secure Weekend Spots

Taylor Pendrith from Richmond Hill, Ontario, sits tied for 35th at one-under par. After struggling in his opening round, Pendrith credited improved putting for his five-stroke turnaround on Friday. "I felt a lot better on the greens today," he said. "I've been putting really nicely this year other than last week, and yesterday's round kind of just rolled over from last week, but today was much better."

Nick Taylor, the most prolific tournament winner among current Canadian male golfers, fought back from a disappointing opening round to reach even par and secure his weekend position. Taylor's Friday round featured just one bogey against three birdies, a significant improvement from Thursday's performance that included two double bogeys.

Sudarshan Yellamaraju, one of two Canadian PGA Tour rookies in the field, made an impressive late charge to make the cut at one-over par. The Winnipeg native, who moved from India at age four and took up golf at six without formal lessons, birdied three of his final five holes on Friday. "I'm pretty happy with the way I finished," Yellamaraju said. "I wouldn't have been able to sleep well if I gave up."

Two Canadians Fall Short of Weekend Play

Mackenzie Hughes, a two-time PGA Tour winner, struggled throughout the tournament, finishing at seven-over par and missing the cut. Hughes acknowledged the unforgiving nature of TPC Sawgrass for players who struggle off the tee. "There is not a lot of forgiveness off the tee," he explained. "Once you're out of position you feel like you're just really trying hard to just make par, and birdie feels out of the question. That's the nature of this golf course."

PGA Tour rookie A.J. Ewart also failed to advance, finishing at nine-over par in his first Players Championship appearance. Despite the disappointing result, Ewart maintained a positive perspective. "I tried to keep my head held high and keep learning," he said. "It's my first time around this place and there is a lot to it. The show goes on, I can't dwell too much on this week."

The four advancing Canadians will now focus on weekend competition at one of golf's most prestigious tournaments, with Corey Conners positioned for a potential high finish if he maintains his current form.
