NHL Goalie Market Glutted for Oilers This Summer

The NHL goalie market appears to be saturated this summer, which could benefit the Edmonton Oilers as General Manager Stan Bowman has stated his intention to address the position.

Bowman's Assessment of Current Goalies

In his end-of-season interview, Bowman provided an evaluation of the Oilers' goaltending situation. He noted that the team only has one goaltender under contract, Tristan Jarry, and emphasized the need to assess the position. Bowman acknowledged that Connor Ingram performed well after being called up from the American Hockey League, especially after Jarry suffered an injury. By the playoffs, Ingram had shown significant improvement and had his game in a good place.

Regarding Jarry, Bowman explained that the goaltender started the season strongly but never regained his confidence or performance after returning from injury. The team's overall struggles made it difficult for Jarry to work through his issues. Bowman concluded that the Oilers are seeking improvement in net.

Free Agent Goalie Options

Chris Johnson of The Athletic listed three goaltenders among his top 20 unrestricted free agents: Sergei Bobrovsky (age 37) at No. 5, Stuart Skinner (age 27) at No. 9, and Frederik Andersen (age 36) at No. 17. It is speculated that the Carolina Hurricanes will re-sign Andersen based on his strong playoff performance. Skinner returning to Edmonton seems unlikely for both parties. Bobrovsky, despite being older and coming off an off season, could be a viable option if the Oilers can free up cap space.

Trade Targets

More intriguing is the possibility of a trade. Frank Seravalli released his list of the top 25 NHL trade targets, which includes Oilers defenseman Darnell Nurse at No. 11. The list also features several goaltenders, including younger options like Sebastian Cossa of the Detroit Red Wings (ranked sixth) and Devon Levi of the Buffalo Sabres (23rd).

Veteran goalies such as Jordan Binnington, Elvis Merzlikins, Sam Montembault, and Adin Hill are also mentioned. These could make sense if Bowman trades Jarry for one of them, giving both a fresh start. However, given that Connor Ingram outperformed all of these veterans last season, it may be more logical to stick with Ingram rather than acquire a struggling veteran unless that veteran replaces Jarry.

Defensive Collapse and Coaching Change

Data shows that over the past season, Edmonton had seven of their eight worst 10-game segments in terms of allowing Grade A shots from 2023 to 2026. This defensive collapse is believed to be a primary reason for the dismissal of head coach Kris Knoblauch.
