Hurricanes Welcome Leafs Fans After Canadiens Advance

As the NHL playoffs advance to the conference finals, Toronto Maple Leafs fans find themselves in a dilemma. The Leafs missed the playoffs for the first time in a decade after a difficult season, leaving supporters to choose a new team to back for the Stanley Cup. One of the remaining four teams is actively courting Leafs Nation: the Carolina Hurricanes.

The Raleigh-based franchise reached out to Leafs fans on X after the Montreal Canadiens clinched their spot in the Eastern Conference final by defeating the Buffalo Sabres in Game 7. In response to a fan pledging allegiance, the Hurricanes' official account replied, 'Welcoming all Leafs fans with open arms.'

The Canadiens' success creates a conflict for Leafs fans. Montreal is Toronto's oldest rival, with matchups dating back to 1917. Yet, many Canadian hockey fans hope to see a Canadian team win the Cup for the first time since Montreal's 1993 victory. The Hurricanes and Leafs have their own playoff history, meeting in the 2002 Eastern Conference final, which Carolina won 4-2 before losing to Detroit in the Cup final.
