The defeat leaves the Marlies trailing 2-1 in the best-of-five Calder Cup playoff series, with Game 4 scheduled for Friday at the Coca-Cola Coliseum.
Monsters Dominate Early
The Monsters jumped out to a two-goal lead in the first period and never looked back. Owen Sillinger opened the scoring before the five-minute mark, and Hudson Fasching added a power-play goal before the first intermission. The Marlies struggled to generate consistent offensive pressure, managing only 15 shots on goal throughout the contest.
Offensive Struggles Continue
Toronto's lack of connectivity on offence was evident from start to finish. While there were occasional scoring chances, including a breakaway by Alex Nylander early in the second period, the Marlies failed to test Monsters goaltender Zach Sawchenko with sustained pressure. Sawchenko recorded a 15-save shutout for Cleveland.
Justin Pearson sealed the victory with an empty-net goal at 16:49 of the third period, and Mikael Pyyhtia added another empty-netter to make the final score 4-0. The crowd of 7,251 at the Coca-Cola Coliseum watched as the Marlies were unable to mount a comeback.
Goaltending Decisions Loom
In net for the Marlies, Artur Akhtyamov made his seventh consecutive playoff start, stopping 26 shots. However, with the season on the line, Marlies coach John Gruden may consider turning to Dennis Hildeby for Game 4. Hildeby has not started a game since April 29 against Laval, and his only action since then was a 20-minute relief appearance on May 5.
Special Teams Disparity
The Marlies' power play went 0-for-3, failing to capitalize on opportunities, while the Monsters converted one of their three man-advantage chances. The inability to score on the power play proved costly for Toronto, as they could not generate momentum or close the gap.
The Marlies must now win Game 4 on Friday to force a decisive Game 5. The puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Coca-Cola Coliseum.
