Edmonton Oilers Closing In on Deal with Veteran Defenseman Connor Murphy
Oilers Nearing Deal with Defenseman Connor Murphy

TSN's Ryan Rishaug reports that the Edmonton Oilers are closing in on a contract agreement with veteran defenseman Connor Murphy. In a statement, Rishaug said: “Sounds like solid progress has been made between Murphy and the Oilers, wouldn’t be surprised to see something get done in the next day or so.”

Murphy's Impact on the Oilers

Murphy quickly became a key contributor after joining the Oilers, providing the smart, aggressive, and sound defensive play the team had lacked since the departures of Adam Larsson and Kris Russell. His physical style and experience bolstered Edmonton's blue line.

Concerns Over Age and Contract Length

At 33 years old, Murphy's age is a potential risk. NHL defensemen often see a sharp decline between ages 33 and 35, and very few over 35 play a top-four role. Any contract longer than three years could be an attempt to lower his cap hit or an exercise in wishful thinking, according to analysts.
