NLL Vows to Keep Ottawa Black Bears in Region After Ownership Termination

The National Lacrosse League (NLL) has announced its intention to keep the Ottawa Black Bears in the Ottawa-Gatineau region following the termination of the team's ownership group. The league confirmed the ownership termination on June 24, 2026, but emphasized that the franchise will remain in the area under new management.

NLL Statement on Ownership Termination

In a statement released Thursday evening, the NLL said it had terminated the ownership agreement for the Black Bears effective immediately. The league did not provide specific reasons for the termination but noted that it was taking steps to ensure the team's stability and future in the market. According to an NLL spokesperson, the league is actively working to secure new ownership that will keep the team in Ottawa-Gatineau.

“We are fully committed to the Ottawa-Gatineau market and to the Ottawa Black Bears fans,” the spokesperson said. “We are moving quickly to find new ownership that will build on the momentum of the team’s first season and ensure long-term success.”

Team History and Impact

The Ottawa Black Bears joined the NLL as an expansion team for the 2024-25 season, playing their home games at TD Place Arena. The team was originally owned by a group led by local businessman John Smith, who had secured the franchise rights in 2023. The Black Bears finished their inaugural season with a 9-9 record, missing the playoffs but drawing strong attendance numbers. Average home attendance was reported at 6,200 fans per game, exceeding initial projections.

“The fans have been incredible,” said former head coach Mike Jones, who was not retained after the season. “It’s a great lacrosse market, and I hope the league can find a stable ownership group quickly.”

Future Prospects

The NLL has indicated that several potential ownership groups have already expressed interest in acquiring the Black Bears. The league expects to finalize a new ownership agreement within the next 60 days, in time for the 2026-27 season. “We have received multiple inquiries from qualified individuals and groups who are passionate about the sport and the region,” the spokesperson added. “We are confident that the team will continue to thrive.”

Ottawa city councillor Tim Tierney, who has been involved in discussions with the league, expressed optimism about the team’s future. “The Black Bears have become a part of our community,” Tierney said. “I’m glad the NLL is committed to keeping them here.”
