Damien Kurek: Canadian Patriotism Requires Respect for Alberta's Concerns
For those who have carried political banners, life unfolds in election cycles. What motivates most is not merely debates or campaign signs, but a profound belief in serving Canada, its people, and our shared future. Recently, this conviction led me to step away from my seat as Member of Parliament to trigger a by-election for Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre. With our nation's unity at stake, I feel compelled to highlight a dangerous trend in how discussions about Alberta separation are being managed.
The Reality Behind Separation Talk
Whether you find yourself in a coffee shop in Battle River-Crowfoot, on a rig site near Grande Prairie, or in a small-town diner just north of the 49th parallel, you will likely encounter individuals expressing frustration with Canada. However, as soon as the word separation is whispered, distant elites and online commentators swiftly label them as traitors or MAGA supporters.
The truth is that these are real people with genuine lives who have simply reached their breaking point. Name-calling is an inexpensive tactic that only pushes individuals further away. Do not assume your neighbor is not a quiet separatist; many feel unheard and marginalized.
Understanding Alberta's Frustration
Typically, when an Albertan discusses walking away, it is not out of hatred for Canada. Instead, it stems from a feeling that the Canada they once loved has abandoned them. Labeling this frustration as disloyalty is precisely what ignites sparks of separation. You cannot tell someone they belong in the family while simultaneously pushing them out the door.
I am a staunch supporter of Canada. I proudly fly our nation's flag in my yard and believe in the federation. Yet, here is the honest reality: you can also be, as I am, an immensely proud Albertan. These two identities are not mutually exclusive. In Ottawa, there is often a perception that one must choose between the maple leaf and the wild rose. For us, the opposite holds true; it is our passion for our home that fuels our patriotism.
Legitimate Grievances Driving the Conversation
Let us be candid about why this dialogue is occurring. Whether it involves unfair equalization payments, the regulatory constraints stifling our energy sector, erosion of freedoms, or defending our right to own firearms, Albertans are not merely complaining. These are legitimate grievances, and there is a widespread sentiment that the Confederation deal is currently broken for our province. Being a patriot does not equate to being a doormat.
Somewhere along the way, we have forgotten how to agree to disagree, instead demonizing those who hold differing beliefs. We witnessed this during the pandemic when individuals questioning mandates were told they deserved to die. We see it when discussing energy, as we are accused of wanting the planet to burn. This mindset betrays basic human respect, and we must avoid similarly labeling neighbors frustrated with the federation.
Hope for Alberta's Future in Canada
Despite these challenges, I remain optimistic about Alberta's future within Canada. Whenever I commence a town hall, I always urge attendees to respect one another. I assure them that no matter your opinions, there is something that the person you are sitting next to both agrees and disagrees with. The core issue is not the other person or even the disagreement itself; it is the act of dismissal.
If we aim to halt discussions of separation, Canada must begin providing Albertans with compelling reasons to remain. This entails acknowledging their concerns, engaging in respectful dialogue, and working collaboratively to address the legitimate issues at hand. Only through mutual understanding and respect can we strengthen our national unity and ensure a prosperous future for all Canadians.
